What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable medication that promotes muscle relaxation by preventing muscle contractions.

The bacteria botulinum is used to make the medical formula Botox. When introduced to the body in small amounts, Botox interrupts communication within your nervous system. By preventing nerve signals from reaching your muscles, muscles are left relaxed.

While it’s most well-known as a wrinkle treatment, Botox has several medical uses, including managing:

  • Chronic pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Chronic migraines
  • Overactive bladder
  • Excessive sweating

Research also shows that Botox might also relieve symptoms of depression.

How does Botox reduce wrinkles?

To reduce wrinkles, Botox is injected into the facial muscles that are creating fine lines and creases.

Wrinkles develop as a natural part of the aging process because of several factors, such as:

  • Dryer and thinner skin
  • Decreased fat layers and elasticity
  • Repeated use of facial muscles
  • Loss of collagen and elastin fibers

Exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet light also accelerates the deterioration of your skin.

As your skin ages, the natural lines and creases that form in your face grow deeper and more permanent. When Botox is injected into the facial muscles causing your wrinkles, the muscles relax to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Botox is the only FDA-approved product to temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet at the corners of your eyes.

What can I expect during my appointment?

Your Botox treatment only takes a few minutes. Dr. D’Alessio uses a small needle for the Botox injections, so you shouldn’t experience much discomfort. Depending on your sensitivity at the injection site, she might numb the area with anesthetic cream before your treatment.

Initial results from Botox are seen within a few days of your appointment as your facial muscles begin relaxing. Within a week, fewer fine lines, wrinkles, and creases will be noticeable in the area.

Since Botox is a temporary cosmetic solution, you’ll see results for three to six months following your treatment. You can expect longer-lasting benefits with regular Botox treatments.

How does Botox® help to relieve migraines?

AtMontville Medspa & Pain Center, Dr. D’Alessio uses Botox to treat chronic migraine pain. While most migraine medications treat symptoms and mask pain, Botox is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for preventing chronic migraines.

Botox is a pharmaceutical injection used to relax muscles by targeting your nervous system. When used to treat chronic migraines, Botox reduces the activity of specific pain nerve pathways associated with the trigeminovascular system.

Regular Botox treatments can prevent approximately eight or nine headache days each month.

What can I expect during my appointment?

When used to prevent migraines, Dr. D’Alessio administers Botox treatments every 12 weeks; you should notice results after two treatments.

Your appointment will take approximately 15 minutes. Dr. D’Alessio uses a tiny needle to inject Botox, so there’s little discomfort associated with the treatment. If you’re sensitive to needles, she can numb the area with anesthetic cream before your injections.
