Spider Veins

Spider veins are a common beauty woe. In fact, spider veins — those dilated capillaries on the skin that resemble spider web patterns — affect up to 50% of the adult population, especially women. These small, pronounced vessels usually appear on the legs and can be purple, red or blue in color. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins are not raised. For most people spider veins are primarily a cosmetic issue, although they can develop into varicose veins over time.

Causes

  • Heredity
  • Hormonal shifts
  • Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing
  • Pregnancy
  • Weight fluctuation

Many people who have this condition may find the veins unsightly which can get in the way of one’s self-esteem. At Bellava we offer the very best minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins, so you can regain your most confident self. In most cases varicose vein treatment in covered by insurance.

Chronic Vein Insufficiency

Vein problems such as varicose or spider veins are often just cosmetic concerns. However, in some cases they are telltale signs of an underlying health issue known as Chronic Venous Insufficiency, or CVI.

CVI occurs when the valves in the veins are not working properly. Healthy veins move blood towards the heart, and they have valves that keep the blood from leaking the opposite way. When the valves are leaking, venous insufficiency occurs.

Warning Signs

  • A feeling of heaviness
  • Leg cramps
  • Tingling and itching sensations
  • Pain from standing
  • Leg swelling
  • Ulcers on the skin

Leg Pain

Most people with venous insufficiency experience cosmetic symptoms such as varicose veins or spider veins. However, sometimes venous insufficiency can lead to leg swelling, pain and cramping (also known as restless leg syndrome) Without treatment, these issues can get worse and lead to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which may contribute to leg ulcers or other skin issues.

We offer a variety of treatment options

In your veins screening, Dr. D’Alessio will help you determine the best treatment or combination of treatments to get you your ideal results.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation, or RFA, is a minimally invasive alternative to eliminate abnormal veins, redirect blood flow to healthy veins, and relieve discomfort.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the vein. The sclerotherapy solution causes the vein to scar, causing the blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and gradually fades.

Injectable Microfoam

Injectable microfoam is used to treat the symptoms of superficial venous reflux disease, and likewise help remove the appearance of varicose veins.

Venaseal

VenaSeal is a minimally invasive procedure in which a catheter is placed into the vein and VenaSeal medical glue is injected to seal off the problematic vein, giving patients incredible results and lessening the risk of complications

Before & After

Veins FAQs

Spider veins may be a sign of an underlying problem known as venous insufficiency. When left untreated this could lead to the development of varicose veins or skin ulcers.

Dr. Donna D’Alessio will perform a physical exam. You also may need a diagnostic ultrasound test to see if the valves in your veins are functioning normally or if there is evidence of any blood clots.

You can’t prevent vein conditions from forming. You can prevent the ones you have from getting worse. Exercise, avoiding standing to long, not smoking all can help prevent vein conditions from getting worse.

Treated veins tend to fade within a few weeks, although occasionally it may take six week to a month or more to see the full results. In some instances, several  treatments may be needed. For example, conservatively, there is about a 50-75% improvement each time Sclerotherapy is performed. Most patients require 2-4 treatments or a combination with other types of treatment for full results.

It depends. Insurance coverage varies based on the cause of your vein disease. If your varicose veins are causing medical problems such as swelling or pain, then your insurance may offer reimbursement. If you are pursuing treatment for cosmetic purposes only, your insurance carrier most likely will not cover the procedure. Our team can help you determine your payment options during your consultation.

There is little to no downtime, and many of our patients return to their normal activity the same day. With the exception of VenaSeal, patients should wear compression stocking for three days following the procedure. A follow-up visit within two weeks to enable the evacuation of blood clots in larger veins can improve the prognosis and the appearance.

Many return to work the same day.

Some side effects may occur, depending on your ideal treatment options. Side effects include:

  • Bruising
  • Raised red areas
  • Small skin sores
  • Darkened skin in the form of lines or spots
  • Multiple tiny red blood vessels
  • Discoloration, rope feeling

These side effects usually go away within a few days to several weeks. Some side effects can take months or even years to disappear completely.
